SPEAKERS:

January 9th - State Senator Stephen J. Buoniconti will speak on The State of The State.  Senator Buoniconti was voted to represent the Hampden District in November of 2004. He was sworn into office in January 2005 and was reelected in 2008. The Hampden Senate District includes Agawam, Chicopee, Springfield and West Springfield. He presently serves as chairman of the Joint Committee on Financial Services, and is a member of the Joint Committee on Public Health, Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security, the Joint Committee on Community Development and Small Business, the Joint Committee on Revenue and the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development

January 16th - Dennis D. Picard, Director of Storrowton Village Museum will talk about "A Lamplighter¹s Life Early Street Lighting in Springfield and Beyond."  Picard will share stories of these times, changing technology and the men who hit the pavement to get the job done. In today's world, where night is turned into day with the flick of a switch, to forget that less then 150 years ago, the lighting of streets was one of the principle responsibilities of town governments. Insuring how it was done, and who would do it, occupied town governments in our area for the last half of the 19th and into the early 20th century.  Dennis D. Picard has been a museum professional in the Living History field for almost thirty years.  He began his career at Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, Massachusetts where he spent twelve years filling various positions including lead interpreter where he researched and designed many public programs which are still offered today
