SPEAKERS:
February 20 - Sally C. Fuller, Project Director for Cherish Every Child, an Initiative of the Irene E. & George A. Davis Foundation and Jim Trelease, artist, writer and author. They will talk about their new campaign Read! A Bright Start = A Bright Future! It's essentially a campaign that will promote the critical milestone of reading at grade level by third grade. And to help parents understand that the most important 20 minutes of their day should be spent reading to their children
February 27 - Dianne Fuller Doherty, Regional Director of the Western Massachusetts Regional Office of the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center Network (MSBDC). Her topic will focus on Community Service: Getting involved locally and globally. The MSBDC, part of the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts, offers free and confidential business advisory services, training programs and information and referral to small businesses in Western Massachusetts. Doherty is active in civic affairs in the Greater Springfield area and is a founder of the Women¹s Fund of Western Massachusetts, an endowment to support women and girls, based on the values of the International Women¹s Conference in Beijing. She serves on the boards of the Pioneer Valley Plan for Progress, Bay Path College, The Community Foundation of Western Mass and the Regional Technology Corporation (RTC). Dianne is a board member of Digital Divide Data, a US based company which offers employment and education to disadvantaged youth in Cambodia and Laos. Dianne is a 2009 Pioneer Valley William Pynchon Community Service Award winner.
ADDITIONAL CLUB NEWS:
Rotary Exchange - The Springfield Club will be hosting a Rotary Exchange team this April from the 10th to the 16th. Five individuals will be visiting from Thailand for the week and we need one more host family from our Rotary Club. Jim Russell has arranged for three area clubs to help with this visit so the amount of time needed to attend to the visitors will be shared amoung many Rotarians. Please check your schedules and see if you can host one visitor for these six days. Contact Jim directly at 567-0700 or 531-2424 (Cell) as soon as possible so arrangements can be made.

FROM THE ARCHIVES: At the September 30, 1949 meeting of Rotary at the Hotel Kimball, "Democracy in Action" - a film detailing Springfield's Young Peoples Symphony was shown. It was introduced by Edward J. Breck. The Young Peoples Symphony was organized in 1944 by Alexander Leslie, then Director of the Springfield Symphony. The filming was done by the Pioneer Valley Cinema Club of which Dr. George Becher and Lee Schermerhorn, (both Rotarians) are members.
