SPEAKERS:

 

May 1st - Melissa "Missy" Kielbasa, head trainer and owner of Sandy Meadow Farm Obedience in Westfield, MA: Her topic will be therapy dogs and her work with the Shriners Hospital for Children. Kielbasa was approached ten years ago by the Melha Shriners and Shriners Hospital for Children, to help train and supervise a therapy dog unit. She developed the training and behavior evaluation process for the handler/dog teams that wish to become working members of the K9¹s for Kids Pediatric Therapy Dog unit. Today the unit boasts over 20 dedicated teams who offer volunteer services to children suffering from medical, emotional, social and learning disabilities. In 2009, the American Red Cross awarded Kielbasa a "Hometown Hero Award" for her work and dedication.

 

May 8th - Michael Quijano-West, Superintendent Springfield Armory National Historic Site in Springfield, MA: His topic is will an update on today's Armory and it's programs. Quijano-West was born and raised on the Mexico/US border in El Paso, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at El Paso. He started his career with the National Park Service as a cooperative education student at Chamizal National Memorial in El Paso, Texas in 1983 while studying at the University. He has served as an Interpretive Park Ranger, Law Enforcement Park Ranger, Horse Patrol Supervisor, Intake Trainee, Acting Sub-District Ranger, Chief of Interpretation, Chief of Resource Management, Acting Facility Manager, Chief Ranger and Native American and Hispanic Liaison. Quijano-West was assigned as the Superintendent of Springfield Armory NHS in May 2006. He is working on many projects to improve Armory facilities, update infrastructure and programs, make the operation financially sustainable and develop strong partnerships with Springfield Technical Community College, the City of Springfield, and the Museum Quadrangle.

In Case You Missed It: The Springfield Rotary Club's Service Fund recently awarded $1,500 to Elizabeth T. Russell, Exectuve Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampden County. The funds will be used towards their project of installing new lines for their server in new office space. Their goal is to increase the number of children served by 15% per year for the next three years.

 

Presenting the check is Springfield Rotary Club President Jim T. Russell;

Executive Director of Big Brother Big Sisters Elizabeth T. Russell (no relation)

and Sue Lavoie, Chairperson of the Service Fund.

FROM THE ARCHIVES: From the May 1, 1953 Meeting Rotarians were entertained by The Westinghouse Male Chorus, ably conducted by Mr. Ernest Hills. The half hour program consisted of renditions such as "Stout Hearted Men", "Oh Shenendoah" and "The Lord's Prayer". The rare treat was enjoyed by all present.
