July 23rd - Rotary District Governor Herb Toback - Herb was good enough to join us recently for the changing of the guard for our club and it would be nice to have a strong showing for his initial visit to our club in his new capacity. Born and raised in Hartford CT, Herb has lived in Newington CT since 1960. Graduated from Weaver High School in 1957. He joined the United States Air Force after graduation and was honorably discharged in 1960. He has been in the computer industry over 50 years, retiring in 2004. He has been married to Esther for the past 44 years and has three daughters, one of whom lives in The Netherlands. Herb and Esther have five grandchildren.

 

July 30th - Local Women Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro: Susana Hall of Longmeadow, MA and Maureen Hayes of Springfield, MA climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 2008 - Hall, RN, BSN, MBA, ACM is a Clinical Business Consultant to Managed Care & Director for Post Acute Services at Baystate Health. Maureen Hayes, is President of Hayes Development Services, a Springfield-based consulting firm focusing on urban economic development. At just under 20,000 feet (5,895 meters), Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest point in the continent of Africa, the highest free-standing mountain in the world, and the highest volcano in the world. It is one of the "Seven Summits", the highest point on each of the earth¹s continents, and is located in the nation of Tanzania on the east coast of Africa. Their ascent took four days, with the final climb involving a nine hour climb that began just after midnight.

WGBY PLEDGE DRIVE - Carol Harris is looking for members of our club to volunteer at the WGBY/TV57 on-air pledge drive on Tuesday, August 4th from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. If you are interested in this opportunity to serve the community please let Carol know ASAP. Our club will get recognition and it will be a great opportunity to visit between the pledge breaks! We're looking for 6 - 8 people - any takers? Email Carol at cmhfunddev2003@yahoo.com

 

FROM THE ARCHIVES: 

At the August 21, 1942 meting, Lester Bell the Manager of the Springfield Rifles Baseball Team, spoke to the members about the value of a baseball franchise to the City, indicating that the Ball Club was a "civic enterprise" and that it needed the backing of the members by way of attending the Ballgames. He further stated that real local support was needed if the franchise is to stay here.
