THURSDAY AUGUST 13th -   Kristin Brennan, former Director of Gardening The Community. Brennan currently fundraises and advises Gardening The Community and will discuss organic gardening, alternative transportation and building community in Springfield. Gardening The Community, a project of the Northeast Organic Farming Association/ Massachusetts Chapter, Inc, works with teenagers to reclaim vacant urban lots and transform them into productive vegetable gardens. They have 5 community gardens located throughout Springfield. The 5 garden sites are: 49 Lebanon Street, 252 Hancock Street, 488 Central Street, 50 Ashley St and Acorn Street (near the Girls Club)! Before moving to Springfield in 2003, Ms. Brennan worked for The Food Project in Boston, working with immigrant residents to remediate contaminated soil and cultivate urban gardens. She has also been a science teacher. She and her husband have three children and reside in the Upper Hill Neighborhood in Springfield. FROM THE ARCHIVES:

At the August 21, 1942 meting, Lester Bell the Manager of the Springfield Rifles Baseball Team, spoke to the members about the value of a baseball franchise to the City, indicating that the Ball Club was a "civic enterprise" and that it needed the backing of the members by way of attending the Ballgames. He further stated that real local support was needed if the franchise is to stay here.
