What Columbus Day Means
to Italian Americans

 Friday October 30st

SPEAKERS:

OCTOBER 23rd - Dana P. Henry, President and CEO of Agawam Robotics Education Association, Inc and Founder Rosie Robotics, Agawam High School - According to Henry, FIRST Robotics (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) has been dubbed a "varsity sport for the mind". It combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team brand, hone teamwork skills, and build and program a robot to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It¹s as close to "real world" engineering that a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team. Students can also qualify for up to $10 million in college scholarships.

OCTOBER 30th - Longtime Springfield Rotarian and musical maestro William (Bill) Massidda - Bill¹s topic will be "What Columbus Day Means to Me." Bill has been a Springfield Rotarian for over forty (40) years and will discuss (through music) what growing up Italian American meant to him.

FROM THE ARCHIVES: At the October 14, 1949 meeting, Ossie M. Solem, the Football Coach at Springfield College spoke about the difficult task confronting a football coach who is accused of commercialism when his material is good, and of inefficiency when it is bad. He, also deplored the tendency of football officials as being "clothed with a little red handkerchief" to take the game away from the players.
