Weekly Meeting: Friday 12:15 @ The Basketball Hall of Fame
|
Spokesman Sponsor: Fannie Lin - President/CEO of Capuano Care
Assisted Living at Home
OCTOBER 26, 2007
District Governor: Dick Borden
District Governor Dick Borden and his wife Rita will be our guests at our October 26th meeting. Hope you're able to attend this meeting not only to meet your District Governor and his wife, but also to show your appreciation to Dick for graciously rescheduling his visit to our club when it became apparent that it would conflict with Enshrinement Weekend at the Basketball Hall of Fame. Dick's calendar of events would make you dizzy, so it was a very generous accommodation on his part to reschedule his visit to Springfield Rotary.
Dick's Rotary career began in 1985 when he joined the Glastonbury Rotary Club. He is currently a member of the Manchester Rotary Club and has 21 years of perfect attendance. He is past president of that club and is a Paul Harris Fellow.
Rita and Dick have been married 41 years and have three grown children and six grandchildren. It is an honor to have them with us.
Also at the October 26 meeting, Membership Chair, Jim Russell, has a special program planned to honor some of our members.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT -Bruce Eger - Board of Directors - 2007-2008
Bruce is Vice President of Commercial Lending at Westfield Bank located on Main Street in Springfield. If you have had the opportunity to sit with Bruce at a Friday meeting, you have already learned that he has a great sense of humor. Bruce has contributed much to the Springfield Rotary by serving on numerous committees including our Auction, Red Cross, Toy for Joy, and Paul Harris Dinner committees. In addition to his club volunteer efforts, Bruce serves the community as Board Member of YMCA, Board Member of United Way, of the Western Massachusetts Enterprise Fund, and of the STCC Foundation. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Colony Club.
Bruce earned his BBA from the Bernard Baruch School of Business and Public Administration at City College of New York. Bruce and his wife Deborah are the parents of two sons, and one daughter. We're not speaking favorites here, but there is a special twinkle in his eyes when Bruce speaks of his three grandchildren. Spending time with his family and grandchildren is at the top of his list of things he enjoys. Deborah and Bruce live in East Longmeadow.

FROM THE ARCHIVES: The Spokesman - April 29, 1934 "We were pleased to have as guest speaker on the 22nd, Ass't Secretary of War, Frederick H. Payne, who hails from Greefield, Mass. He delivered a very enlightening address on the subject, "War Preparedness," ...the head table was graced by the presence of several influential Army men."
The Spokesman - October 19, 1928
Hey: "Aren't you wild about bathing beauties?"
Hay: "I don't know, I never bathed one."
The Spokesman - November 16, 1928
"It is worth while to quote Sinclair Lewis, that cynical author of Babbitt, after a tour in England:
'I have been accused of saying nasty things about the Rotarians, but I assert that the growth of Rotary in Great Britain, where it already has hundreds of chapters, is more important for world tranquillity than all the campaigns of the reformers put together.'
