When I think of Rotary, I think of each Rotarian as one of the unique spokes making up a Rotary wheel. Each Rotarian’s commitment to the Club makes the wheels turn to create the ripple effect of positive good. Thank you for all your help.
Rotary International has given each club through MyRotary.org an excellent platform to set realistic goals for their Club and track their success. I recently was updating the progress of my goals for my Presidential year in MyRotary.org. Thank you for time, talent and treasurer that brought in new members, fed the homeless and funded our Rotary Foundation and Serivce Fund over the past ten months.
Looking ahead, I want to thank incoming President Laurie Rosner and incoming 1st Vice-Presient Lamont Clemons for entering goals into MyRotary.org for the 2016-2017 Rotary year to insure a clear course for Springfield Rotary for the upcoming year. She and Lamont were able to enter in the service area the ongoing service project at the Friends of the Homeless and the two upcoming projects: "Service Above Self- Being a Role Model led by Alicia and the Sidewalk Art Fundraiser led by Samir Patel in conjunction with Roteract in the fall. They also could proudly note that we update our website and provided email update on engagement opportunities for our members thank you Past President Rick Lee and Alicia Garcia. In addition, Laurie has set membership goals and pledge goals for The Rotary Foundation, Polio Plus and the Club Service Fund for the 2016-2017 Rotary Year.
For those of you not able to attend last Friday’s meeting, we are happy to announce The KEVS Foundation, Gray House and Springfield Public Libraries are the 2016 community grants recipients. The goal of KEVS Foundation is to educate and help prevent Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in children and young adults. The mission of The Gray House is “To help its neighbors facing hardships to meet their immediate and transitional needs by providing food, clothing and educational services in a safe, positive environment in the North End of Springfield.” The Springfield Libraries are a place of connection to information and knowledge, culture and our community. Thank to those who have already purchased tickets to the event or an advertisement for our program book. Thank you to Michael Tarby for donating the cost of producing the 2016 event program book. After a series of three earthquakes -- two in Japan and one in Ecuador -- killed hundreds of people, injured thousands, and caused billions of dollars in damage late last week, Rotary members in those regions have created disaster relief funds to help survivors.
In Ecuador, the powerful 7.8-magnitude quake that struck Saturday night has killed more than 400 people, with 2,500 injured. Those figures are expected to rise.

The 2016 Council on Legislation may well be remembered as one of the most progressive in Rotary history.
Not only did this Council grant clubs more freedom in determining their meeting schedule and membership, it also approved an increase in per capita dues of $4 a year for three years. Horace (Ace) Smeckle, yoga and fitness instructor, will address the Springfield Rotary Club's luncheon meeting Friday, April 22nd. Ace will give demonstrations and instructions on Prana Yoga poses. Prana is the Sanskrit word for "life force" or vital principle.[1] In Hindu philosophy including yoga, Indian medicine, and martial arts, the term refers collectively to all cosmic energy, permeating the Universe on all levels. Prana is often referred to as the "life force" or "life energy".
Smeckle is a self-employed yoga and fitness instructor who leads classes at Springfield Area YMCA's, LA Fitness and other venues. Please wear comfortable clothing (no fine for casual Friday) and a yoga mat if you’re interested in trying out some of the poses.

Our spring service project is underway, focused on interesting students in potential career paths. Students will be doing mock interviews of volunteering Rotarians as a form of research in developing their potential career interest. The classroom will use the FOUR WAY TEST as one form of their rubric. Please note the students will be taking photos to use in their posters when they present to the club in our general meeting on June 10th.
The project needs four Rotarians for each session. Please consider participating and RESERVE the date you would like to attend. Under school rules, you must complete a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) from the Springfield Public School website or in person. A copy of your driver's license is also required.

On Friday April 15, 2016, Frank Colaccino, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Governor; CEO of the Colvest Group and Committee Chair of the 2015 Holiday Showcase / Service Above Self Luncheon Committee, along with Paul Lambert, Vice President of Enshrinement Services & Community Engagement at the Hall, presented a check for $3,500 to Jack Toner, President, Rotary Club of Springfield.
The contribution was from the proceeds of the 6th Annual Holiday Showcase/Service Above Self luncheon held at the Hall of Fame last December. The 2015 Service Above Self Award Winners were local honoree, Henry M. Thomas III and national honoree, Mike Glenn, for living out the Rotary motto “Service Above Self”. The contribution will be used for the Rotary clubs Service Fund grants, which are awarded to Springfield based tax-exempt, non-profit organizations for capital items.
Congratulations on successful evening for Cambodian Wine Clinic. Thank you to Springfield Rotarians who came out to support Dr Maryanne Herron on Friday. Sad To Report - Seven policemen, working to protect Polio Vaccination Teams in Pakistan, were killed recently by a splinter group of the Taliban in Karachi's Orangi Town area. Pakistan's Prime Minister released a statement saying "The officers sacrificed their today to secure the future of our coming generations."
Council On Legislation - The big news last Thursday was the resolution proposal 16-118 to the RI Board presented by RIPE Germ. This resolution affirmed the eradication of Polio as a goal of the highest order of RI and passed unanimously & with a resounding ovation. The Big Switch - April 17 marked the beginning of the largest and fastest globally coordinated rollout of a vaccine into routine immunization programs in history. Between 17 April and 1 May, 155 countries and territories around the world will stop using the trivalent oral polio vaccine (tOPV), which protects against all three strains of wild poliovirus, and replace it with bivalent OPV (bOPV), which protects against the remaining two wild polio strains, types 1 and 3. This effort will provide better protection for children against polio, particularly those most vulnerable to infection and will reduce the number of vaccine induced Polio infections.

Pakistan - No Polio cases reported this week. Eight Polio cases reported in 2016 with 54 cases recorded in 2015 The most recent case, with the onset of paralysis on 03/22/16 was from the Bannu district, Khyber Paktunkhwa. One new Polio positive environmental sample reported this week. Sub-National Immunization Days are under way this week using Bivalent OPV - but were suspended in some security compromised areas due to the attacks on policemen.
Afghanistan - One Polio case reported in Afghanistan this week. Three Polio cases reported in 2016 with 20 cases recorded in 2015. The most recent case was reported on 03/27/16 from the Kunar Province. No new Polio-positive environmental samples collected this week. Sub-National Immunization Days and are underway this week. National Immunization Days are planned for May 17-20.
Post Endemic - Nigeria - No Polio cases reported in 2016 with 0 cases recorded in 2015. The most recent case was reported on 7/24/14.
