Dear Fellow Rotarians,

What a busy week for the Springfield Rotary! Several of you are attending the District Training Assembly, Wednesday morning, May 10. We are excited to learn from you all ideas to enhance the Club experience. Again, I know Lamont is gearing up for his year and soon will be sharing his team’s goals for 2017-2018. Since, we have our Paul Harris and Community Grant Celebration this Thursday, May 11, there is no meeting on Friday, May 12.

On a Foundation note, as you know we have blown away our goal of $6,000 for a total of $7,055 for 2016-17 Foundation Drive. Of the funds you give, over 90 cents of each dollar goes in to Global or District Grants to make a difference in the world. The Rotary Foundation continues to receive the highest status from Charity Navigator, a non-profit evaluation organization. We will continuing this celebration at our Paul Harris and Community Grant Celebration this Thursday, May 11. Visit www.springfieldmarotary.org, and click on the Paul Harris emblem to buy your tickets. Paul Harris Awards will be given to Peter Lappin, an integral part of the Service Above Self Luncheon behind the scenes and Jack Toner, Past President 15-16.

An equally important aspect of our celebration this Thursday, May 11 is $6,000 local grants being given to 6 charities serving Springfield. We will award $1,000 each to the following recipients: Springfield Rescue Mission, Stone Soul, Inc., New England Public Radio, The Gray House, Springfield Museums and Dakin Humane Society. The grants allow Springfield Rotary to make a positive impact in our community. We will be looking to develop more service opportunities with these organizations in the upcoming Rotary year.

In closing, again we have an awesome organization! I urge you to continue to share Rotary with a possible new member this Thursday, May 11 or a Rotarian we have not seen lately. As Jack Toner, past present notes, “a fun way to have Rotary come up in conversation is to wear a different Rotary pin each day.” You never know who will be curious enough to ask you “What is Rotary all about?” So, I thank all of you who give of your time, talent and treasure to keep the Springfield Rotary a vibrant and welcoming Club.

Paul Harris and Community Award

The Rotary Club of Springfield will be celebrating our 102nd Anniversary at The Fort Restaurant in Springfield on Thursday, May 11, 2017 from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. The Club will mark its 102nd Anniversary by presenting two Paul Harris Fellowship Awards and giving away $6,000 in grants to deserving Springfield charitable organizations. The Paul Harris Award is the highest honor local Rotary Clubs bestow on local Rotarians or community leaders who embody the Rotary mission of "Service Above Self." A $1,000 gift in each of their names has been made to the Rotary Foundation, supporting international and domestic humanitarian Rotary efforts.

Approximately 100 Rotarians and community leaders are expected to attend. The event is open to the public and tickets are $40 per person. Admission includes validated parking, hearty appetizers and 1 beer or wine. A cash bar will be available. Tickets must be purchased in advance and will not be sold at the door. LAST WEEK’S GUEST SPEAKER

We had another great meeting this past Friday, May 5, 2017 where we welcomed Cynthia (Cyd) D. Melcher, executive director of the World Affairs Council of Western Massachusetts. The World Affairs Council of Western Massachusetts is a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization founded in Springfield in 1926 as a chapter of the Foreign Policy Association. The Council presents regular speaker events on various aspects of international affairs and current events, hosts up and coming leaders from around the world through the US Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program, and works with local educators to enrich students’ classroom experience through its School Partnership program. Cyd Melcher’s presentation included a short quiz on international affairs and specific missions of World Affairs Council of Western Massachusetts.

Eleventh Annual 40 Under Forty Gala

40 Under Forty is a celebration of 40 young business and civic leaders in Western Mass. The 40 Under Forty Gala is a lavish cocktail party featuring butlLoft ered hors d’oeuvres, food stations and entertainment. The event will begin with a cocktail hour, open food stations and networking. This will be followed by an exciting awards presentation and conclude with deserts and more networking. Join 500+ professionals, business, civic, and non-profit leaders as we toast the region’s rising stars on Thursday June 22. Also, the third Continued Excellence Award honoree will be announced.

Paul Picknelly has graciously donated the ballroom and all related expenses for a fund raising event on Friday June 2ond from 5 to 7:30PM at The Sheraton Monarch Place. 100% of the ticket price will be returned to the Springfield Museums Corp. Attached is an invitation with more details.
