President's Message
Greetings Fellow Rotarians,

We are continuing The Rotary Foundation Drive through May of this year.  I want to thank the 29 Club Members who have contributed over $4,000 combine to date.  Thank you for Bill Low, Bob Stevens and Jane Albert for their recent contributions systems to The Rotary Foundation.  The goal is 100% participation.  Please follow the attached link to make your contribution.

Any amount is greatly appreciated.

On March 15th, we will hold our annual joint St Patrick’s celebration with the Rotary Club of West Springfield.  The event will take place at the Carriage House at Storrowtown Tavern in the evening from 5:30 to 7:30.   The Rotary band will feature our own Dee Kuerzel and Assistant District Governor Dave Condon.  Please mark your calendar and bring a prospective new member.  The Tuesday evening gathering will replace our regularly scheduled Friday meeting.  Details to follow.

Our resident Texan, Ivan Butterfield, sent me more great information Rotary's fight against Polio. Currently, there were new 70 cases reported globally of disease.  Although no new cases of the disease were reported in Nigeria in 2015, Rotary will remain on the ground continuing to vaccinate to keep the country polio free.  When The Rotary Foundation enters a country, polio is not the only disease that they are up against.  TRF is supporting neonatal health, clean water and sanitation and efforts to avert civil conflict.  The Gates Foundation is continuing to match 2:1 any contribution made to Polio Plus up to 35 Million Dollars.

On May 12th, 2015, the Rotary Club of Springfield will award Paul Harris Fellows at the Colony Club.  The event will take place in the evening. In addition to bestowing Paul Harris Fellowships, we will give grants to worthy charities in our Community.  We hope to also award scholarships to the Rotary Leadership Institute several high school students in the City of Springfield.  Details to follow.

Thank you again for your commitment Service Above Self.

Jack

Dr. MaryAnne Herron: Water Changes Culture

Dr. MaryAnne Herron, Ph.D., Director of Special Projects at the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation will address the Springfield Rotary Club's luncheon meeting this Friday, January 22nd.   Dr. Herron has worked in Cambodia since 2003. Her topic will be “Changing the Culture of more than 100,000 people with the water filter project.”

MaryAnne will also distribute an invitation to each Rotarian to the 4th Annual Beer & Wine Tasting event to be held on April 15, 2016. The ticket sales for all Rotarians (and their guests) go directly to the water project.

Dr. Herron also works closely with the Girl Guides of Cambodia (similar to Girl Scouts) as girls and women are treated as second class citizens and receive little education. Many are sold into human trafficking.

Dr. Herron received her Ph.D. from UMASS in School Administration with post doctoral work at Harvard School of Education. She was the principal at Brookings K-8 school for 16 years and is presently the Director of Special Projects at The Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation.

Please invite a guest to join you and hear Dr. Herron's incredibly moving stories about Cambodia and the help (and hope) that thrives there.
