Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Last week we moved our meeting from Thursday to Friday due to the MGM Casino opening and anticipated traffic woes. I am happy to report that plenty of members showed up and we had a wonderful meeting. Many thanks go to Rick Lee who debuted an 11 minute “Chalk It Up” video he put together from hours of video he took at the event last May. The video received much applause as it showed the great art on display that day, not to mention the enthusiasm of the children and volunteers alike. A shorter version will be available to present to prospective sponsors. Both versions will be on our website soon. Be sure to check it out if you missed Thursday’s meeting.

The Club also thanks Co-chairs Steve Jablonski, Gillian Palmer and their entire committee for making the Chalk It Up idea a reality. Happy to report the club made a profit, which went into our Service Fund.

There is NO Rotary meeting this Friday, August 31^st, due to the Labor Day holiday. Our next meeting is Friday, September 7^th!

Speaking of Labor Day, do you know the origins of this day? In the late 19th century, as the trade union and labor movements grew, trade unionists proposed that a day be set aside to celebrate labor. While many of us regard this holiday as the unofficial end of summer, its purpose was to honor the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws and well-being of the country. The first Labor Day Parade was in New York's Union Square, in 1882. So now you know!

Dene on the Mend

Dinner at Friends of the Homeless

DINNER AT FRIENDS OF THE HOMELESS
Our club will be serving dinner at Friends of The Homeless on Thursday, September 6, 2018, from 4:15-530PM. They are located at 755 Worthington St in Springfield. Those who have participated know what a rewarding experience it is. Hope to see you there.

Book Drive for Mason Wright

NOTE: The club is collecting books for Mason Wright’s expanded library. Hardcover, paperback, children’s books and DVD’s are all needed. Please put a “Donated By The Rotary Club of Springfield” bookplate inside each item you donate. BP stickers can be picked up from Sue or Richard. The books can be dropped off to Alan at 74 Walnut St. in the Mason Square neighborhood or brought to any Rotary meeting. Alan Popp has collected and/or recreated items from the Rialto Skating Rink, Johnson's Bookstore and Court Square Theater.
